Historia za wasanii

HISTORIA YA MAISHA YA BAHATI BUKUKU )

  • Bahati Bukuku.

Biography:

Bi Kidude is an institution on Zanzibar, and remains East Africa’s greatest living musical legend. The diva of Zanzibar taarab, she also plays other musical styles including more ngoma-based unyago and msondo. Born Bi Fatuma Binti Baraka, Bi Kidude grew up in a family of seven in the Zanzibari village of Mfagimarigo. Her father was a coconut seller.
Bi Kidude?s exact date of birth is unknown, much of her life story is uncorroborated, giving her an almost mythical status. Kidude started out her musical career in the 1920s, and learnt many of her songs with Siti bint Saad. She has performed in countries all around Europe, Middle East and Japan and finally recorded her first solo album (Zanzibar, Retroafric Recordings) only six years ago, while in her mid-eighties. Recently she released a second locally-produced album (Machozi ya Huba, Heartbeat Records) with her traditional drums influencing the burgeoning Zenji Flava local hip-hop scene in one of the most remarkable juxtapositions of musical style in modern ?World Music?.

Since fleeing a forced marriage at the age of 13 and escaping her homeland of Zanzibar, Bi Kidude has led an extraordinary and varied career as a drummer, singer, henna artist and natural healer. Her first journey was to the mainland of Tanzania, where she walked the length and breadth of the country barefoot.

With renewed confidence and a new attitude to tradition (by now Kidude had thrown off her veil and shaved her head!) she returned, slowly to Zanzibar where she acquired a small clay house in the 1940's and settled down to life grounded in the traditional roots of society.

Her role as part of the Unyago movement, which prepares young Swahili women for their transition through puberty and excelled at the art of henna designing for young brides, manufacturing her own wanja application from age old recipes fit 'to make a rainbow shine.' To this day, Bi Kidude performs traditional unyago music and is still the island's leading exponent of this ancient dance ritual, performed exclusively for teenage girls, which uses traditional rhythms to teach women to pleasure their husbands, while lecturing against the dangers of sexual abuse and oppression.

Her many talents were acknowledged by Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) at the second Festival of the Dhow Countries in 1999, when she was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to the Arts.

Bi Kidude's is a remarkable story, one which challenges our perception of age, and of the role of women in Islam. She has never conformed to the media stereotype of a Muslim woman ever since she removed her veil. To see a ninety-something year old Muslim woman drink, smoke, flirt, dance and drum is a unique experience. To witness the transformation as she reverses the aging process and changes from a wrinkled granny into a vital shining star is nothing short of revolutionary.

In the summer of 2004 Bi Kidude toured Europe with Zanzibar's illustrious Culture Musical Club taarab orchestra. Midway through this tour, the whole of Zanzibar was thrown into shock and disarray when a rumor spread fast through the island that Bi Kidude had died. From the narrow streets of Stone Town to the barazas of N'gambo and throughout the villages this was the only topic of conversation as the island rapidly acquired the atmosphere of mourning. This rumor continued to spread even long after the offices of Busara Promotions had disseminated confirmation from Bi Kidude's European promoters that on the contrary, she was alive and very well. She was surprised to hear that people in Zanzibar think that she has died:
quot;Sijafa bado. Labda sababu watu hawajaonana nami sasa karibu mwezi. Lakini bado tunaendelea na safari na bado safari ndefu ya miezi miwili. Lakini sijambo, sina wasiwasi miye. Kuimba naimba na nguvu zote ambazo ninazo ili watu wafurahi."

?I haven?t died yet. Maybe people are saying that because they haven?t seen me around for almost a month. But we are still continuing our tour which lasts for two more months. Me, I'm well, I have no problem. Me I sing with all my strength and continue to make people happy.?

In 2006 ScreenStation Productions with Busara Promotions produced a 66 minute video documentary titled As Old As My Tongue: the Myth and Life of Bi Kidude.
"Over the last three years we have filmed with Bi Kidude and her extended entourage," says director Andy Jones. "From her humble home in a township on the edge of historic Stone Town to the grandeur of the Theatre de la Ville in Paris we have captured moments of love, jealousy, protection and exploitation of a witty and humble woman. Musical moments combined with highly personal observation form the trunk of our story. The music is extraordinary. From the seemingly poetic but really biting satire of the grand Taarab orchestras to the telling rhythms of primal sexuality expressed in her x-rated Unyago the film is punctuated with sensational live footage."
This intriguing and inspiring woman is a repository and leading exponent of Swahili culture. (Bi Kidude) herself says, “How can I stop singing? When I sing I feel like a 14-year old girl again.”

FID Q

From when he dropped those infamous 16 bars on a featured track 'Ukweli na Uwazi' on the now classic Wachuja Nafaka album, Bongo HipHop was born again through the sharp lyricism of Fareed Kubanda aka Fid Q!!

'hamjajua mtakula nini halafu nyie mnaponda mali hivi hiyo ni nini, utajiri nguzo, ubahili hivi ndo mnavyoamini, mmesahau kiama ni nini au mmesahau mafunzo ya dini...' spits Fid Q with rapid raw delivery over Pfunk's heavy boom-bap back drop. Little did Bongo Flava enthusiast know how much trouble they gonna find themselves in by letting this humble hip-hopper through the golden gates..thats until FidQ.COM dropped!!

'Akupigaye ngumi ya jicho na we mpige ya sikio akikuuliza unaonaje na we mwulize anajisikiaje...' !! That level of cadence and nonchalance delivery, mixed with witty punchlines and simple-yet complex lyricism, had not been heard in the game since the passing of the Great D-Rob(RIP)! Phone calls were ringing across the globe, hiphop pioneers nodded in agreement and smiled proudly to the arrival of Hiphop saviour!!

Here was a kid with passion for the artform. Here was a complete MC, an all rounder who didn't rely on cheesy singy-song choruses to compose a hit. Here was a guy taking the risk and using 'Multi-syllabic rhyme schemes' in the audience that was getting soo lazy to analyse the realness of Hiphop!

In the era where bubblegum rap is prevalent and sugar coated rnb hooks define a hit, Fid Q is a breath of fresh air! In this oversaturated Bongoflava artform where 'nursery' rhymes earn you the title of 'King of Rhymes', Fid Q stands like a giant that no-one comes close to even stare in the eye! Who else can rock the stage with no gimmicks but pure lyrics? Who in this game stands by themselves amongst well established artists that come on stage with hundreds of tag-alongs just to boost their confidence? The self declared 'one man army' ( 'Fid Q ni jeshi la mtu mmoja') rolls on stage for Dolo and owns the show with enough flows to confuse water down a bendy stream.

When 'Chagua Moja' dropped, all the Nay-Sayers and those who thought the Kid was a fluke, had to bite their tongues. Those 8 bars (I still replay his verse 4 times before letting the others come in. No disrespect to Rhino,Adili and Langa cause they got busy too but I wish Fid Q did this song for Dolo). Blew that beat to smithereens!

'Fanya kazi kama mtumwa ili uje uishi kama mfalme, ukae au uchuchumae, umchukie au umpende akupendae, ufiche uchi au uvue chupi uzae...' Spits Fid Q with so much charisma you almost kick yourself for not thinking of these lines before him!

After ‘Chagua Moja’ Fid Q dropped ‘Mwanza Mwanza’ A track with a heavy Majani kicks and phat beat, fid Q laced the beat with his ill lyrics and impeccable metaphors. The track addressed the fans on some matters, like his longevity in the hip hop game and industry as a whole. He begins the track by saying

‘Nilianza rap kabla mototo wa Dandu hajafu,Sugu hajatoa Album,BoneLove hamjui Falsafa mlangoni msanii analipa, Professer anajiita Nigga’

After that track it was no doubt to the audience Fid was the one doing the music that was missing in the industry for far so long, and that was Hip Hop, Real Hip Hop.

It was no longer a buzz; everyone was just patiently waiting Fid Q to drop his highly anticipated LP known by ‘Vina Mwanzo Kati Na Mwisho’. Due to his humbleness and the need to trigger the fans demand, Fid released a single called ‘August 13’ followed by ‘Vina Mwanzo kati Na Mwisho’. It was like a blessing to the real Hip hop fans as the Album was a top-notch, filled with clever, smart word-play mixed with conscious lyrics. After ‘Vina Mwanzo Kati na Mwisho’ Fid was considered as a Hip Hop Messiah in Bongo.

His grind never ceased, the doors in other countries started opening widely, as he was recognized in another countries too and enabled him to conquer some features from other Countries artists,fd from Holland and Germany respectively.

Fid Q is the one and only artist from East Africa who managed to perform in the Big Brother house in South Africa and around the same year him and Witness managed to scoop an award for the best Video with Channel O.

Fid being Ambassador of Virus Free Generation in Tanzania, he did a track with a German artist known as Prinz Pi, a song goes by a germany title ‘Zu Hart’ which mean ‘So Hard’.

On his verse he begins with so much pain by saying ‘Hana tofauti na wale sweet 16 wa kwenye movie,Hips zake hasifichwi na jeans, but she’s stupid, sasa hawezi hata kufufill what God gave her, waliodata na zake sex-appeal walitenga fedha’

December 2008, Fid Q toured Germany with Prinz Pi and managed to perform on places like Berlin, Hamburg and Duisburg. During the same tour he took some footage for his track known as ‘I Am A Professional’, A track with all Hip Hop elements, a heavy beat with massive scratches, a well sampled chorus embraced with sharp and raw delivery of plenty metaphors.

‘Usiniite halfman, niite man and a half, you think small and you remain Small for life, hatuwezi piga same instrument but we can all be in the same key son, experience makes a person better or bitter, naweza flow slow lakini brain ina speed up’

PROFESSOR J-

Joseph Haule (born December 29, 1975), popularly known as Professor Jay, is a Tanzanian hip hop artist. He is one of the prominent representants of the "Bongo Flava" Tanzanian hip hop subgenre, which mixes elements from both Western hip hop and the Tanzanian tradition (including swahili lyrics as well as an activist attitude towards Tanzanian social issues such as HIV/AIDS, wealth, inequality, and political corruption).

He started rapping in 1994 as a member of the group Hard Blasters, best known for their hit "Chemsha Bongo" (then he used stage name Nigga J) from their first album, "Funga Kazi". Only one year later, they won the title of best hip-hop group in Tanzania.

During his solo career which he started in 2001, he has released number of hits, including "Nikusaidiaje" and "Zali la Mentali (feat Juma Nature)". Other songs released by Professor Jay include "Piga Makofi" and "Yataka Moyo". Just like Mr. II, he is a pioneering Tanzanian MC, who have remained some of the most popular hip hop musicians in Tanzania, despite influx of many new bidders. Also similar to Mr. II his lyrics often have political messages. In one of his songs he imitates an elder politician and ridicules the fake promises they all mindlessly spew as they are trying to get elected. The song continues with a chorus saying the words "Ndio Mzee" which means "Yes Elder". This represents the brain washing of the public as politicians make these false promises over and over. It is interesting to note however, that after this song was produced, the president of Tanzania referenced the lyrics in one of his speeches, which acknowledged the presence of Bongo Flava and the success of Professor Jay's political lyrics.
His first album, "Machozi, Jasho na Damu," gained instant recognition for which Professor Jay won several awards. He attained other awards such as the best hip-hop album in Tanzania with his second album, "Mapinduzi halisi".
Professor Jay's songs include Nikusaidiaje (featuring Ferooz), Nimeamini (featuring Lady Jaydee), Inatosha (featuring Sugu), Vuta raha (featuring Ferooz), Border kwa border (featuring Nazizi), Heka heka za star, Interlude, J.O.S.E.P.H., Nisamehe (featuring Banana), Wapi nimakosea, Una, Hakuna Noma, Jina Langu, Bongo Dar es Salaam, Piga Makofi, Msinitenge, Sio Mzee, Zali la Mentali, Nidivyo Sivyo, Mtazamo (featuring Afande Sele and Solo Thang), Hapo Sawa. Professor Jay is featured on Nonini's song "Kumekucha"
His former group Hard Blasters is set for a comeback in 2009. The new lineup will consist of Professor Jay, Big Willy and Fanani. They will release a new album

Personal Quotes
I love the high-risk (guys). I don't like cream puff, corny guys. Usually they are the nice guys, the ones that won't hurt you. They'll pull out the chair for you and the whole nine yards. Everything is perfect and boring. I like the risk, I like the edge. That's the thrill for me.
[on Fashion] Wear the clothes. Don't let them wear you.
[on Jesse Williams] Jesse, who's in my music video for 'Russian Roulette', is so hot!
I love flirting at the moment. I'm single and I'm enjoying my freedom. But I don't give my phone number out that often. But if I'm dating, I check the boy from the top to the bottom.
[on what a man needs to impress her] He has to be good in bed and the size matters. You know what I mean? The inner beauty counts as well, but without a toy it doesn't make it fun.
[on her musical sound change] Everyone was really surprised when i started liking new things and changing my image. I was 16 when i was signed and i'm 22 now. My musical taste and image is going to change naturally. It's not forced, i do what comes natural to me. Sometimes i like to be dark... other times i like to be really light and lady-like.
[on size zero models] Being a size zero is a career in itself so we shouldn't try and be like them, it is not realistic and it is not healthy. You shouldn't be pressured into trying to be thin by the fashion industry, because they only want models that are like human mannequins. They know that if we see an outfit on a mannequin in a shop window we will love it and want to buy it whatever size we are. That's why they have size zero models - they want to sell clothes. But you have to remember that it's not practical or possible for an everyday woman to look like that."
[on Homophobia] I know that a large part of my fanbase is gay. They've shown me love from the start. I mean in this industry, everyone from my glam people to my dancers are gay. You can't be homophobic in this line of work, i'm a popstar! It hurts me when i read fan mail from a fan who have been called names for liking me.
My weight fluctuates, but I don't weigh myself every day. I'm 5ft 8in and weigh around 9st 7lb.
[on Cheryl Cole] I think she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Like, how do you have a face like that, with hair like that and dimples, and a body like that, that's proportioned like that? And you have a successful career, something about that is not right.
[on Russell Brand] I first met him when he was interviewing me on TV. I was sick and it was the worst interview I have ever done... Nothing was funny to me. I thought it was the most stupid interview I ever did in my life. Why am I talking to this idiot? He made me want to throw up again.
I spend more time over there (in London) than I spend in L.A., and that's where I live. London is more like my home.
[on doing a duet with Katy Perry] We're actually working on some music together - hell yeah. I would love to tour with Katy. She's a rock star. And when I see her live, she just brings such a fun vibe, like a colorful rock star.
[on planning Katy Perry's bachelorette party] I have to come up with something cool, because she's getting married in India. So I'm like, 'OK, now what do I do to match that?' That's at the end of the year, so we've got some time to plan that.
[on Katy Perry] When I first met her, her personality was so on point, I felt like she had no edit button, she was really fun and had a great sense of humor.
[on missing her friend, Katy Perry's wedding] I will never ever forgive myself for that, it was a crazy time, it was a crazy week. I'm switching management. I'm really sad that I missed it.
[on having children] I don't really plan on the age. It could be a year from now. It could be 10 years from now. Whenever is right. I mean, I have a lot of other stuff to accomplish before I get to kids. Whenever the time is right, I'll just know. If I had a girl, she'd probably be really rebellious. She would be like a bundle of karma. I would love to bring them up in Barbados.
I definitely think a child deserves both parents. It would be selfish of me, because of my pride and independence to say, 'Oh, I just want a sperm donor, because I can do it myself.' I can do it myself, but that's not fair. I'm just saying that whatever comes my way I'll be able to handle it, but in a perfect book, there would be marriage and kids.
(jokingly responding when being questioned about a rumored relationship) I hate to burst your bubble but I'm dating girls!
[on collaborating with Britney Spears]: I asked my fans last week who they wanted me to collaborate with, and Britney was one of the most popular names. It's very strange because Britney never does features. It was really amazing that she really wanted to be part of this song. She really liked the song to begin with, but it was a different story when she had to sing it, and she really wanted to be a part of it. So it made it really, really special, because you never see two pop female artists doing songs together any more. Just call us 'R&B'.
[on Chris Brown] It's incredible to see how he pulled out of it the way he did. Even when the world seemed like it was against him, you know? I really like the music he's putting out. I'm a fan of his stuff. I've always been a fan. Obviously, I had some resentment toward him for a while, for obvious reasons. But I've put that behind me. It was taking up too much of my time. It was too much anger. I'm really excited to see the breakthrough he's had in his career. I would never wish anything horrible for him. Never. I never have. (2011).
I think that Madonna was a great inspiration for me, especially on my earlier work. If I had to examine her evolution through time, I think she reinvented her clothing style and music with success every single time. And at the same time remained a real force in entertainment in the whole world.
[on recording music with Chris Brown in 2012] I reached out to him about doing 'Birthday Cake' because that's the only person that really - it made sense to do the record. Just as a musician - despite everything else - that was going to be the person. You know I thought about rappers, and I've done that so many times, and the hottest R&B artist out right now is Chris Brown. So I wanted him on the track, and then in turn he was like 'Why don't you do the remix to my track?' and it was a trade off. We did two records. One for my fans. One for his fans, and that way our fans can come together. There shouldn't be a divide. You know? It's music, and it's innocent.
[on her weight loss in 2012] The Five Factor Diet has gone straight out the window ever since I went on tour. I mean, It's difficult to have any kind of routine when your schedule is that crazy. So I really have no idea how I'm continuously losing weight. It's actually pretty annoying, because now I don't have a butt, and I have no boobs. I already had no boobs to start with. So annoying! and I'm eating everything! (March, 2012)
[on some people criticizing her reunion with Chris Brown after the two recorded music together in 2012] I respect what other people have to say. The bottom line is that everyone thinks differently. It's very hard for me to accept, but I get it. People end up wasting their time on the blogs or whatever, ranting away, and that's all right. I don't hate them for it. Because tomorrow I'm still going to be the same person. I'm still going to do what I want to do.
[when asked if she is at ease posing in revealing clothing] Totally, especially when it's Photoshopped. I'm comfortable in my underwear around the right people.
My mother would kill me if I posed nude. She raised me with certain standards.
