TIGO SUPPORT FOR BLOOD DONATION DRIVES TO BE HELD IN MARA REGION ON WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY CEREBRATION

                                Dar es Salaam Tanzania, 4th June 2013:

Tigo Tanzania today once again pledges its support towards a blood donation drive to be held in Mara region on this year's World Blood Donors Day the 14th of June 2013. These blood drives are scheduled to be conducted in other regions across the entire country and the National event will be held in Mara region.
"The National Blood Transfusion Service is once again pleased to partner with Tigo in our efforts to create public awareness on the importance of voluntary blood donation and address adequacy and safety issues that go with it. These drives will play a significant role to counter the increased blood shortage problem that faces many hospitals across the country therefore help prevent unnecessary deaths, particularly among women and children who are the major recipients of blood... I would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude towards Tigo for their firm support towards this initiative, which is at the heart of helping Tanzanians live better and healthier lives” said Dr Efesper A. Nkya, NBTS Program Manager.

Mr. William Mpinga, the Tigo's brand manager said that “Tigo feels honored and proud to be a part of this important cause aimed at creating public awareness on the importance of safe blood donation, thanking current active donors for their valuable donations, as well as encourage new donors to come forward and donate blood. The state of the nation’s well-being is of great value to Tigo hence our involvement in this noble cause. Valuable lives are lost every year among women and children due to shortage of blood. This is something that deserves the utmost attention and support of every single one of us and should not be ignored.”
Mr. Mpinga went on to further state “I would like to take this opportunity to urge all Tanzanians to take a proactive approach into this matter and donate blood, for this simple selfless act is a critical factor in saving lives, as the 2013 World Blood donor Day theme which states “Every Blood Donation is a Gift of life’’.Tigo has a keen interest in supporting the country's health sector. We have and we will continue to invest heavily to ensure that Tanzania's health standards are improved.
World Blood Donor Day is an occasion created to raise awareness of the critical need for safe blood and blood products, promote voluntary blood donation and thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. The theme for the 2013 World Blood Donor Day campaign is “Every blood donation is a gift of life.’’

About The National Blood Transfusion Service

 The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) was established in 2004 and is a programme under the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) with a mandate of ensuring availability of adequate and accessible safe blood and blood products through a centrally coordinated blood transfusion services in Tanzania.

Its main objectives are:
1. To increase capacity for collecting, processing and distributing adequate safe blood and blood products from voluntary non-remunerated repeat donors to meet requirements of patients in need.
2. To ensure availability of adequate and accessible supplies of safe blood from voluntary non remunerated repeat blood donors from low risk population throughout the United Republic of Tanzania.
3. To introduce an effective monitoring and evaluation system to maintain quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the National Blood Transfusion Service.
NBTS operates country wide with TPDF and TRCS as partner through its six Zonal centres in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Tabora, Mtwara, Mbeya and Moshi As a TACAIDS stakeholder it has greatly contributed much in HIV/AIDS prevention, as since its establishment, has greatly reduced the prevalence of HIV among blood donor from 7-10% in 2004 to 1.2% in 2012.
